Live in Studio (2012) — Instrumental Guitar Performance Recording.

I took some time in December to do a live studio performance. I wanted to have a good quality recording of a diverse live set. This one covers material you might hear at a wedding, dinner, cocktail party, or just about anything in between.

A realistic performance recording was the main goal with this project. We took a lot of time with set up, to capture the best blend of intimacy and size, then I performed one single set. No retakes. No fixing mistakes. No overdubs. Just one guitar and a hi-hat. The delay you hear was done live through a delay pedal and into the board.

SONGS: 1. Better Together – Jack Johnson 2. Wild Horses – Rolling Stones 3. Crash – Dave Matthews Band 4. In My Time (Medley) – Led Zeppelin 5. Fading Light – Jake Dudas 6. Harvest Moon – Neil Young 7. Wheat Kings – The Tragically Hip 8. I Can’t Help Falling in Love With You – Elvis.

Wild Horses and improvising in Open G tuning.

I work with a lot of different guitars in live performance.

Many signature songs are done in alternate tunings, and the ability to improvise in open tunings like G and D is unparalleled. Songs like She Talks to Angels, Ahead by a Century, Wheat Kings, Yellow and Harvest Moon are all done in unique open tunings. Trying to play them any other way sounds awkward.

Wild Horses is the penultimate example for me of improvising in Open G. It’s such a beautiful melody with lots of depth and progression. It’s always a high point of a performance. You can get blissfully lost building it in and out of the main riff.
