I do a wide range of work—from instrumental guitar for weddings and private events, to singer/songwriter performances at private events and public venues.

Instrumental Guitar – Videos

Below you’ll find a series of videos of live instrumental guitar performances.

They showcase the range of material I perform at weddings and private events—along with a true live sound. They also show how you can be highly creative with song selections, while still giving a seamless feel to any event.

My Approach

At weddings and private events, diversity and creativity in material is an important focus. The demographic of these audiences varies widely. As such, you’ll find an interesting blend of songs. What ties them together is style, craftsmanship and authenticity.

The acoustic guitar is a versatile instrument, and great music is great music, no matter what era it’s from. Acoustic guitar performances have a unique charm that is open to interpretation. Classic songs have a retro flair, especially when placed next to modern selections. Different genres of music can have a high contrast, yet a unique continuity, when placed next to competing selections.

On an acoustic guitar, you can go from the Tragically Hip to Justin Bieber; Frank Sinatra to Ed Sheeran; the Beatles to Harry Styles… and it’s seamless.

When working with clients, my job is to build a highly-focused soundtrack that makes an event personal and memorable.

Live @ The Lantern (2018)
About the videos

Recorded live at the Lantern (Stoney Lake, ON), the focus here was on high-quality sound in a live setting. Video is of basic quality, shot through a stationary iPhone. The sound was pulled directly from the soundboard, and included a mix of a guitar microphone and direct-line from the guitar.

These videos are designed to showcase a true live sound. They also show the seamless flow of an actual performance. With the Beatles’ ‘Here Comes the Sun,’ for example, you’ll hear it transition to Neil Young’s ‘Needle and the Damage Done’ as it fades out.

This collection spans a wide range of wedding and private-event situations. ‘Here Comes the Sun’ is a poignant wedding cue, ‘Love Yourself’ is a great cocktail-hour song, as is ‘Bobcaygeon.’ That said, I have used Tragically Hip songs on many occasions for wedding recessionals. ‘More Than the Sun’ is a great example of a softer sound for pre-ceremony music, or the dining portions of a private event.

Singer/Songwriter (Covers) – Videos

Below you’ll find a video of a live singer/songwriter performance.

It showcases my approach to cover songs, as well as the creative, spontaneous aspect of live performance.

I work frequently as a singer/songwriter at private events, public venues, and as a featured original act. Material can range from 100% cover songs, to a blend of cover and original material.

My Approach

As a singer/songwriter, authenticity is everything. To me, music needs to be genuine to three things: the performer, the material, and the audience.

Demographically, public audiences vary widely. There’s everything from the retro-contemporary flair of craft breweries like Old Flame and Sawdust City, to the wider range of people you’ll find at the JW Marriott Muskoka. There’s an art to finding the right balance for each venue.

Having a diverse and creative playlist is a cornerstone of my work. Being able to shift gears quickly is critical. You need songs that resonate with everyone in the room—even as that room constantly changes. You want to frame familiar material with different shades and hues. You want to flow seamlessly between genres—gluing it together with craftsmanship and artistry.

Creative performance is also a huge aspect of my singer/songwriter work. Half the fun of live music is the journey itself—developing unique transitions between songs, building into moments, and extending them when they’re really flowing.

Artists and Songs

Over the past 12 years, I’ve enjoyed curating a unique evening of cover songs. I wanted to go beyond the usual suspects and put together more ambitious, memorable work. I started with songs that not only resonated with me personally, but also with a larger audience. From there, I’ve pushed further—finding unexpected, contemporary material that suits my strengths as both a guitarist and singer.

The result is a playlist that’s rich, well-rounded and unexpected. You’ll hear not just songs from every end of the spectrum, but GREAT songs from every end of the spectrum. Depending on the evening, there’s everything from Led Zeppelin to Maroon 5, the Tragically Hip to John Mayer, Lenny Kravitz to Johnny Cash, Neil Young to Jack Johnson, Coldplay to Ariana Grande.

I tend to introduce it with a Spanish flair—making the main riff catch you by surprise. The spaciousness of the music also allows for a livelier rhythmic feel, along with room for creative guitar work in the mid-section.
