I love it when new artists sneak in and surprise you.
You may have formed certain opinion about someone. You might have written them off because of some uber-hit you didn’t like. Or some dumb thing they said in the press. Or for whatever reason.
Then all of a sudden you open up a little and hear something you never heard before.
John Mayer’s Continuum album is absolutely brilliant. I am guilty of writing this guy off way back when Daughters was all over the media. I’m glad that my wife persisted in having me take a second look.
I’ve been listening to Continuum over the past couple of weeks. I’ve been working away at taxes. Really relentless, repetitive work. It shuts you off in a bizarre way that opens you up to music. All of a sudden, tracks like “I Don’t Trust Myself (With Loving You),” “Vultures,” “Stop This Train” and “Slow Dancing In A Burning Room” start washing over you like a Costa Rican evening breeze. Just the right tempo for living. Incredible musicianship. Great insight. I honestly had no idea how good this guy was.
If I’m preaching to the converted, sorry for joining the chorus a little late. For the rest of you, if you don’t have this album, go get it.
It’s certainly a nice way to do your taxes…
